Turkish foreign minister Hakan Fidan to pay official visit to Portugal
The agenda is expected to include consultations on regional issues, expansion of trade and economic cooperation, boosting mutual investments, and implementing joint projects in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, transportation, and port management. Fidan will also emphasize the strategic importance of Türkiye’s participation in EU-led security and defense initiatives, industrial programs, and projects.
Diplomatic ties between Türkiye and Portugal date back to 1926, following Portugal’s role in the Treaty of Lausanne. To commemorate the centenary of relations, joint events are planned in 2026. Trade between the two nations reached $2.9 billion in 2024 and grew to $3.1 billion in the first ten months of 2025.
The countries have also strengthened defense cooperation. On Nov. 14, 2025, a steel-cutting ceremony for the first of two auxiliary replenishment and logistics vessels for Portugal took place in Istanbul, marking a key milestone in long-term military collaboration.
